matter and its interactions
Summer is not that far away. He are some great new books to add to your child's library.
Students wrote in their science journals as they observed the properties of ice. Cooperative learning groups discussed how to change the ice with a number of substances such as rock salt, table salt, Epsom Salts, string, ice picks, food coloring and heat. Flashlights were used to view the changes. Students will explore matter and its interactions in the next upcoming weeks. This is a unit that will involve observations and mixing substances. Conservation of Matter is a key concept in this unit. When you mix substances, matter is not lost, but it can take different forms: solids, liquids and gases. The total weight of the substances mixed will not change. This week we will study the properties of solid, liquids and gases. Students will practice describing properties in detail. Observation of materials will be documented on charts. I went to the Montshire Museum for a science unit training. The next unit will be about States of Matter. Students will be learning about solids, liquids and gases. The Montshire continues to give our school excellent support including trainings, school visits and materials to use for science education.
The Fairbanks Museum supports the school with excellent classes that go with the units we are teaching. The Fairbanks also shares their materials with our school. Students will participate in a simulation meeting to discuss the impact that we have on our earth. Many students will be bringing ideas to the discussion to solve problems that we are learning about in class. Students are welcome to dress up professionally. You are welcome to send in healthy foods to add the festive meeting atmosphere.
Science
Students are continuing to study the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and atmosphere. Human impact is also the focus. The students are learning many details about each sphere. The next part of the unit is to design ideas to change human impact on the earth. Some students are participating in the National Science Contest, put on by Explore-a-Vision. This is an assignment by choice and interest. Not all students will be doing this. |
